How long should I wait until I change the earring in my cartilage?

Question by Anya: How long should I wait until I change the earring in my cartilage?
I just had my cartilage pierced and was told not to change the earring until 8-12 weeks later.
That seems like a big gap to me, 4 weeks is kind of a long time. Will it be safe to change it after 8 weeks or should I wait longer?
Some of my friends have changed their earrings early, but I don't want to mess it up.

I could change my earrings after 6 weeks. You should be able to change them soon, just don't leave the earrings out of your ears for a long time. Different earrings shouldn't hurt as long as you are wearing earrings.
